Week in Review - Midnight Drag Racing

Just one race to recap this week. Javan and Chass made the two-hour trek to Pigeon Forge, TN for the ARC-favorite Midnight 8k Road Race. This race and it’s long flat straightaways has treated the Collective well in the past - Stuart has been a repeat winner and Javan has now PR'ed here twice. 

While Javan and Chass were disappointed that they weren’t able to fit in a quick trip to Dollywood, both guys took advantage of opportunity to get in a quality race effort. This event is usually competitive and this year was no exception. The Collective boys battled with frequent rivals (and Knoxville studs) Ethan Coffey (2nd) and Stewart Ellington (6th), among others. In the end, Chass held on to a strong 3rd place finish and Javan pulled off 4th in a sprint finish. Nice racing, fellas.

Week in Review: July 20th - 26th

ARC members took part in a few different races on a variety of surfaces last week. We had Scott in action for a track 1500m in Eugene, OR, Justin mixing it up at a road 5k in Winston-Salem, NC, and Victor & Mark giving it a go at a beer mile in Asheville, NC. 

Scott started things off on Thursday at the Oregon Track Club All-Comers Meet at historic Hayward Field. While he is known as a long distance specialist, SW has been using these mid distance races to get back in touch with speed. His 4:21 1500m shows he’s making progress. 

On Saturday, Justin took to the roads for the always-competitive Beat the Heat 5k. In his first race effort since the Spring, he had a strong run and earned 3rd place in 15:21. Justin looks to be on track for another successful season of racing this Fall.

Also on Saturday, Victor and Mark made their Beer Mile debuts at the second edition of the 2015 Asheville Beer Mile series. This edition was run XC style on grass and rolling trails. Victor had a great debut and a strong battle with Wedge Run regular, Arek Robinson. In the end, Victor had to settle for second after Arek pulled away on the final lap. Meanwhile, Mark proved that Frankie is not the worst chugger on the team, and ended up earning a penalty lap by failing to keep down the final drink. Pathetic.

Week in Review - Beer Relay Edition

A clash of titans occurred this past weekend at Oskar Blues REEB Ranc. Team Lapp / Mielke battled Team Adkins / McHenry in the Burning Can Festival’s Beer Relay.  After 4 x trail 2 miler and 4 x beer chugs for each team, Team Lapp / Mielke (Representing Urban Orchard Cider Company and Ba) were victorious by mere seconds.  

Early reports suggest Adkins’ notoriously poor chugging skills cost his team dearly. Check out the video below and you be the judge.

Week in Review

In the first week of July, we had three members of the Collective racing in three different states. 

On Tuesday, Javan finished up his track season at the Sir Walter Miler Pop-Up Mile Championship in Raleigh. His race didn't go as he had hoped (including a tumble in the first lap), but he was in the mix and gave it a go on a rough day at the office. Nice season, Lapp! 

On the Fourth, both Peyton and Scott raced 10k road races, but on opposite sides of the country. Peyton competed in the always-competitive AJC Peachtree Road Race down in Atlanta. This race is a yearly tradition, and his 16th place finish in the open division was one of his best performances at Peachtree to date. Strong running! 

Scott toed the line for the first time since moving out to Oregon at the Aquafina OTC Butte to Butte 10k in Eugene. After a tough and slow uphill first mile, he found a strong rhythm and brought it home on PR pace in the last few miles. Keep it rolling to some PRs this summer, SW!

Week in Review

It has been a quiet week on the racing front for the ARC - Javan was the only Collective member in action. Most guys are building miles for the fall, Captain Adkins has been vacationing out West, and Scott has been recruiting athletes for the Blue Ridge Relay at the USA Track & Field Championships out in Eugene (it's pretty cool to meet the world's greatest athlete just walking down the street). 

Javan continued his track campaign with a strong race at Tuesday's Sir Walter Miler Pop-Up Mile at Cary Academy outside of Raleigh. He won the tactical race in 4:26 after a 2:23 opening 1/2 mile. Javan now moves on to the championship race this week. 

Tuesday's Pop-Up Mile was part of a series of mile races taking place in the Raleigh area every Tuesday in June. The top 10 times of the first 4 weeks qualify for June 30th's championship mile. The winner of the Pop-Up championship race earns the final spot into August's Sir Walter Miler Elite Race on August 7th. The Sir Walter Miler folks struck gold with this idea!
