Blue Ridge Relay Alert!

We are less than a week out from the marquee event on the Asheville Running Collective racing calendar - the Blue Ridge Relay

ARC will be putting out a good deal of news, media, and updates in the coming days. Stay up to date by following the Collective on a variety of platforms:

With it’s finish located in beautiful downtown Asheville, we consider 208-mile Blue Ridge Relay a “home” race. After months of planning and thousands of miles of training, it comes down to 12 runners (lineup will be announced this week), 2 passenger vans (or 1 van + 1 SUV if Enterprise decides to overbook again), 36 “legs” (routes that vary from 2.6 miles to 10.5 miles), 18,000 feet of elevation gain, 20,000 feet of elevation drop, back country roads, smashed quads, screaming calves, and intense rivalries.

The birth of the ARC dates back to the 2011 BRR, when Frankie Adkins rallied the top racers from around Asheville to win back the title from Knoxville Track & Field Club, who won in 2010 with a 6-man ultra team. The Collective has gone on to win 3 of the last 4 relays, and ignite a fierce rivalry with both KTC and Charlotte Running Club. While KTC is sitting out this year, Charlotte is back for what is sure to be another run for the record books.

Week in Review - Hilly Half Edition

The Boone faction of the ARC was in action this weekend up at the High Country Half Marathon. This race, the second event of the High Country Triple Crown, has been a yearly fixture on the race calendar for both Peyton and Caleb. Each guy has had a turn or two as the winner of the overall race series, as well as this particular race.

This year, both got in solid efforts and posted some of their fastest times on the challenging course. Look for Peyton and Caleb to put in strong performances at the upcoming Blue Ridge Relay on Sept 11th-12th!

Week in Review - Keep the PRs Coming!

ARC runners put in a strong weekend of racing around WNC this weekend. Caleb started things with a bang by netting a shiny new 5k personal record up in Boone on Saturday morning. Later on that night, Phil and Brent took on a Western NC institution, the Maggie Valley 8k. Both guys got in solid rust-busting efforts as they aim toward the Blue Ridge Relay in three weeks.

Week in Review

Why do we do this? Why wake at 5:30 am for morning miles before work? Why skip (ok, delay) happy hour for blistering reps on the track? Why tack on those extra two miles when our legs have already called it quits? Why stick with it after all these years?

We do it for the day when it “clicks”. For that feeling when your legs surprise you. For those few moments of contentment before the inevitable thought pops in your head - “I think I can go faster!”.

Scott has put in weeks of hard work on his speed this summer. He’s run track workouts at 5k pace, races at 1500, and tempos on the wood chips… and it’s paying off. This past Saturday, he lined up for the notoriously fast Bowerman 5k with the goal of nabbing his first sub-16. Well, he got it… and then some. 15:36 - way to take advantage of a fast course and a deep field, SW!

Week in Review - Midnight Drag Racing

Just one race to recap this week. Javan and Chass made the two-hour trek to Pigeon Forge, TN for the ARC-favorite Midnight 8k Road Race. This race and it’s long flat straightaways has treated the Collective well in the past - Stuart has been a repeat winner and Javan has now PR'ed here twice.

While Javan and Chass were disappointed that they weren’t able to fit in a quick trip to Dollywood, both guys took advantage of opportunity to get in a quality race effort. This event is usually competitive and this year was no exception. The Collective boys battled with frequent rivals (and Knoxville studs) Ethan Coffey (2nd) and Stewart Ellington (6th), among others. In the end, Chass held on to a strong 3rd place finish and Javan pulled off 4th in a sprint finish. Nice racing, fellas.

Chass Armstrong - 3rd - 25:38
Javan Lapp - 4th - 26:04 (10-second PR!)
