The Boone-area members of the Asheville Running Collective, Caleb Masland and Peyton Hoyal, were in action on the roads this weekend.
For the second year in a row, Caleb took the win at the Cub, a very challenging 7-miler. This race is part of the High Country Triple Crown series, which has been won by either Caleb or Peyton each of the last 3 years. The Cub was just a warm-up for Caleb’s title defense at the upcoming Grandfather Mountain Marathon on July 11th. The marathon begins in Boone at an 3,333 feet and climbs to an elevation of 4,279 ft on Grandfather Mountain. Keep climbing, Caleb!
Peyton also had a great race this weekend at the Rhododendron 10k in Burnsville, NC. It was a competitive race up front with ZAP Fitness's Cameron Bean taking the win in 31:48, and Peyton taking second place in 32:39 - 23 seconds faster than his winning effort from last year.
Congrats are in order for Peyton for his excellent coaching, as well. Over the past few years, he has done a phenomenal job guiding his star Watauga HS athlete, Kathleen Mansure. This Fall, Kathleen burst onto the national scene by earning a ticket to the prestigious Foot Locker Cross Country National Championships. This past weekend in Greensboro, she capped off a successful senior year with a strong 6th place showing in the 5000m (17:08) at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals. Nice job, Peyton and Kathleen!
