Week in Review

In the first week of July, we had three members of the Collective racing in three different states.

On Tuesday, Javan finished up his track season at the Sir Walter Miler Pop-Up Mile Championship in Raleigh. His race didn't go as he had hoped (including a tumble in the first lap), but he was in the mix and gave it a go on a rough day at the office. Nice season, Lapp!

On the Fourth, both Peyton and Scott raced 10k road races, but on opposite sides of the country. Peyton competed in the always-competitive AJC Peachtree Road Race down in Atlanta. This race is a yearly tradition, and his 16th place finish in the open division was one of his best performances at Peachtree to date. Strong running!

Scott toed the line for the first time since moving out to Oregon at the Aquafina OTC Butte to Butte 10k in Eugene. After a tough and slow uphill first mile, he found a strong rhythm and brought it home on PR pace in the last few miles. Keep it rolling to some PRs this summer, SW!

Week in Review

It has been a quiet week on the racing front for the ARC - Javan was the only Collective member in action. Most guys are building miles for the fall, Captain Adkins has been vacationing out West, and Scott has been recruiting athletes for the Blue Ridge Relay at the USA Track & Field Championships out in Eugene (it's pretty cool to meet the world's greatest athlete just walking down the street).

Javan continued his track campaign with a strong race at Tuesday's Sir Walter Miler Pop-Up Mile at Cary Academy outside of Raleigh. He won the tactical race in 4:26 after a 2:23 opening 1/2 mile. Javan now moves on to the championship race this week.

Tuesday's Pop-Up Mile was part of a series of mile races taking place in the Raleigh area every Tuesday in June. The top 10 times of the first 4 weeks qualify for June 30th's championship mile. The winner of the Pop-Up championship race earns the final spot into August's Sir Walter Miler Elite Race on August 7th. The Sir Walter Miler folks struck gold with this idea!

Weekend Race Results

The Boone-area members of the Asheville Running Collective, Caleb Masland and Peyton Hoyal, were in action on the roads this weekend.

For the second year in a row, Caleb took the win at the Cub, a very challenging 7-miler. This race is part of the High Country Triple Crown series, which has been won by either Caleb or Peyton each of the last 3 years. The Cub was just a warm-up for Caleb’s title defense at the upcoming Grandfather Mountain Marathon on July 11th. The marathon begins in Boone at an 3,333 feet and climbs to an elevation of 4,279 ft on Grandfather Mountain. Keep climbing, Caleb!

Peyton also had a great race this weekend at the Rhododendron 10k in Burnsville, NC. It was a competitive race up front with ZAP Fitness's Cameron Bean taking the win in 31:48, and Peyton taking second place in 32:39 - 23 seconds faster than his winning effort from last year.

Congrats are in order for Peyton for his excellent coaching, as well. Over the past few years, he has done a phenomenal job guiding his star Watauga HS athlete, Kathleen Mansure. This Fall, Kathleen burst onto the national scene by earning a ticket to the prestigious Foot Locker Cross Country National Championships. This past weekend in Greensboro, she capped off a successful senior year with a strong 6th place showing in the 5000m (17:08) at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals. Nice job, Peyton and Kathleen!

Race Results Round-Up

Two members of the Collective were in action this past week with wins on the road and track.

On Tuesday, Javan Lapp raced 800m at the Greenville Track Club all-comers meet. He placed first with a strong 1:56.68, his fastest 800m since his UNC-Charlotte days. Big shout-out to WNC high schoolers and Fast Twitch Track Club teammates James Dorris (1:58.26), Dylan Shamburger (1:58.71), and Noah Graham (1:59.17) for joining the sub-2:00 club!

On Friday, at the Pisgah Brewing Company Race to the Taps 4 Miler, Chass Armstrong had a very solid solo effort of 20:26 - good for first place. This was the second race in the Race to the Taps series, which is hosting 4 milers at different Asheville-area breweries throughout the Summer.

Weekend Race Results Round-Up

Collective racers kept it local this weekend to focus on Asheville's packed weekend of racing.

On Friday, Javan and Victor took on one of AVL's most notorious races... the Chamber Challenge. The 4pm start often delivers hot & humid conditions on the hilly downtown course. Javan successfully defended his 2014 title and Victor crossed the line in 4th. This is also a big team race with runners representing their employers and earning bragging rights for the coming year. Victor's Mission Health team took the W in the mixed team category, while Javan's Pisgah Legal Services team finished a strong 3rd place.

On Saturday, Frankie and Peyton toed the line at another one of AVL's most challenging races (ok, most are pretty difficult), the Asheville 10k. In it's second year, this race has quickly become one of the most competitive races of the year, thanks to a healthy prize structure that attracts out-of-town talent. Both Peyton and Frankie were able to finish in the money with 3rd and 5th (1st master), respectively.

Finally - shout out to great friend of the Collective, Rich Heffron, on his strong 15:56 at the Roselle Run For the Roses 5k in Chicago.
